Step 7

Text without a picture (Tekst uden billede)

Now there is no drawing to lean on. The text has to carry the story on its own.

Set 1 Dad bakes a cake

The text

Far skulle bage en kage.Han fandt mel, smør og sukker.Men han kunne ikke finde æggene.Han ledte i køleskabet.Han ledte i skabet.Til sidst fandt han dem i posen.De havde stået der hele tiden.

Talk about the text

  1. Where were the eggs?Hvor lå æggene?
  2. Why did dad look in so many places?Hvorfor ledte far så mange steder?
  3. Have you ever looked for something that was right in front of you?

For the adult: There is no drawing, so the text has to carry the story on its own. If it is hard, read it aloud to your child once first. Then your child knows the story and can spend the effort on reading the words when they read the text themselves afterwards.

Set 2 The bike has a puncture

The text

Talk about the text

  1. What did grandad fetch?Hvad hentede morfar?
  2. Why did bubbles come up in the water?Hvorfor kom der bobler i vandet?
  3. What would you do yourself if your bike got a puncture?Hvad ville du selv gøre, hvis din cykel punkterede?

For the adult: You find the hole in a bicycle tube by holding the tube under water and seeing where the bubbles come from. Good to know if your child asks.

Set 3 Finding the way in the woods

The text

Vi gik forkert to gange.

Talk about the text

  1. What did mum bring?Hvad havde mor med?
  2. Why could the map not help them?Hvorfor kunne kortet ikke hjælpe dem?
  3. Have you ever been lost? How did you find your way again?Har du prøvet at fare vild? Hvordan fandt du vej igen?

For the adult: They get lost with a map that is out of date. What saves them is a sound, not the map.

Set 4 The shark

The text

En haj har mange tænder.Den taber dem hele tiden.Der kommer nye tænder frem.En haj kan lugte blod langt væk.Den svømmer let og stille.De fleste hajer gør ikke folk noget.Man skal bare lade dem være.

Talk about the text

  1. What happens when the shark loses a tooth?
  2. How can a shark know that there is a wounded animal far away?
  3. Which animal are you most afraid of?Hvilket dyr er du mest bange for?

For the adult: The text is facts, not a story. Many children would rather read facts than a story, and it gives just as good practice.

Set 5 The dark cellar

The text

Talk about the text

  1. What is it that Emil hears in the cellar?Hvad er det, Emil hører i kælderen?
  2. Why does Emil laugh at the end?Hvorfor griner Emil til sidst?
  3. Have you heard something in the dark that turned out to be harmless?

For the adult: The scary part lasts two lines and is then resolved. Read them a little faster, and pause just before it turns out to be the cat.

Set 6 The key was gone

The text

Talk about the text

  1. Who had the key?Hvem havde nøglen?
  2. Why did they sit down on the steps?Hvorfor satte de sig på trappen?
  3. What do you do if someone locks themselves out?

For the adult: The story ends with an explanation that arrives from behind: dad did not know himself. Ask your child when we as readers find out, and when dad does.

Set 7 The ant

The text

Talk about the text

  1. What do the ants do that are not fetching food?
  2. Why do ants walk in a line?Hvorfor går myrer på række?
  3. Have you seen an anthill? Where was it?Har du set en myretue? Hvor var den?

For the adult: The text is facts, not a story. It ends by explaining something your child may have seen without knowing why, and that is worth stopping at.

Set 8 The balloon party

The text

Talk about the text

  1. What happened when the needle hit the balloon?Hvad skete der, da nålen ramte ballonen?
  2. Why did the hall go quiet?Hvorfor blev salen stille?
  3. What is the funniest thing you have done at school?

For the adult: Two lines describe the same moment: first the bang, then the silence. Read them slowly and pause briefly where it says stille, quiet.

Is this the right step?

If your child reads most of the words without sounding them out, the step is too easy. If your child gets stuck on more than a few, go one step down. That is not a defeat, it is the fastest way forward.
